What is an Objective Assessment?
"Objective assessment is a form of questioning which has a single or multiple specific correct answer".(Answers.com) Objective assessments are usually generated to measure a specific skill and to accompany curriculum or standards and benchmarks. What types of Objective Assessments are seen in the classroom?
Within the classroom, objective assessments are the easiest to create, administer, and grade.Unit exams, benchmark tests, standardized short cycle and of course the National test are several examples of assessments that are mostly objective. There are some portions, such as writing and short answer, that can be subjective but a majority of the questions and answers are specific and a response is either 100% correct or 100% incorrect.
Are Tests the only Objective Assessments for Student Learning?
This is the main questions being asked and I personally beleive the answer is no. Any form of assessment or activity within the classroom should have some sort of objective aspect. Even presentations and creative projects should have a rubric that is looking for specific responses. If our planning and assessing of student learning is not objective based than there is no way of measuring learning and growth of our students. Test style objective assessments don't give a big picture of a students growth or learning because they can not see the learning style of the students or the process of computation but objective assessments are the quickest way to gather and compare data.
